Position Purpose:
This role mitigates Stericycle's exposure to risk by leading, planning, coordinating, and implementing safety management systems in their respective geographical areas, which requires application of safety engineering principles, job safety analyses, task-based evaluations, technology and identifying causes of past accidents to prevent or correct unsafe working conditions and to maintain regulatory compliance. Also responsible for local coordination and management of claims-related activities, including working closely with third party administrators (TPA) and management to resolve claims at the least possible cost and effectively deploy post loss reduction techniques such as return to work activities.
Key Job Activities:
1. Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.
Being highly visible and interactive with operations teams. Perform regular facility inspections and audits per Company requirements with a critical eye toward compliance and hazard identification, while educating operations team on Safety & Health importance to our team members.
Applying these methods and conducting hazard analyses and interpreting results.
Reviewing entire systems, processes, and operations for failure modes, causes and effects of the entire system, process or operation due to failure and/or error of systems or actions as well as weaknesses in proposed or existing policies, directives, objectives or practices.
Compiling, analyzing and interpreting data from accident and loss event reports and other sources regarding injuries, illnesses, collisions, property damage, inspections, and violations to: Identify causes, trends and relationships; Ensure completeness, accuracy and validity of required information and other required reporting; Initiate investigations and ensure they are completed in a timely manner
2. Develop hazard control methods, procedures and programs.
Formulating and prescribing engineering or administrative controls to: Eliminate hazards and causes of exposures, accidents and loss events; and Reduce the probability or severity of injuries, illnesses, losses or damage from potential exposures, accidents, and loss events when hazards cannot be eliminated through administrative and engineering controls.
Developing methods which integrate safety performance goals into operations and their management systems and processes and developing safety & health policies and procedures for integration into operational policies and procedures.
Advising and assisting HR specialists when applying hazard analysis results or dealing with the capabilities and limitations of personnel and coordination of related WC claims activities.
Staying current with technological developments, relevant regulations, standards, codes, methods and practices. Primary interface on Company regulatory inspections and manages onsite inspections, required regulatory responses and participation at hearings where necessary.
3. Implement, administer and advise others on hazard controls and hazard control programs.
Providing feedback on all action items found in inspections/audits to operations team while also providing potential solutions to actionable items in order to maintain facility compliance.
Preparing reports which communicate hazard controls which are based on analysis and interpretation of accident exposure, loss events, compliance failures, and other data.
Directing or assisting in planning and developing educational and training materials or courses.
Advising others about hazards, hazard controls, relative risk and related safety matters when they are communicating with the media, community and public.
Managing and implementing hazard controls and hazard prevention programs which are within the duties of the individual's professional safety position.
4. Measure, audit and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programs.
Establishing and implementing techniques for periodic and systematic evaluation of program effectiveness, including inspecting, auditing and interpreting organizational records for compliance with all applicable Federal DOT and hazardous materials regulations.
Developing/utilizing methods to evaluate the costs and effectiveness of hazard control programs and measure the contribution toward the overall effectiveness.
Providing results of evaluation assessments, inspections and audits, including recommended adjustments and modifications to hazard control programs, to individuals or management responsible for their management and implementation.
Education:
Experience:
- 3 years of experience in the Occupational Health & Safety Field, preferably in transportation or manufacturing/industrial settings
- Investigating vehicle accidents and injuries to determine root cause and appropriate corrective actions
- Training team members
- Implementing safety programs including, Safety Improvement Committees, Lock out/Tag out, Confined Space, Personal Protective Equipment, etc
